ISSUE THIRTEEN • May - August 2009

Triskaidekaphobia? We here in San Pedro, CA embrace the number 13 for many reasons, but we won’t get into that. Issue 13 features an up to date interview with “outlaw artist,” Shepard Fairey on various topics that should quiet all the skeptics. Shepard also did the cover art for this issue. We talk with former pro skateboarder, rocker and record label owner, Todd Congelliere about his San Pedro based Recess Records, and what it takes to keep it going for over 20 years. Halbadal talks shit with up and coming L.A. rippers, Stab City on various hilarious subjects. Great skate photo spread mostly of the local San Pedro, DIY, Channel Street Skatepark and a couple other spots supplied by El Beardo. Former SST Records co-owner and writer, Joe Carducci gives us his take on political cycles and music undergrounds. A fair, but true restaurant review of Niko’s Pizzeria, brought to you by the Smut Peddlers own John Ransom. Our regular “Hanks Ghetto” page featuring Charles Bukowski poetry with Linda Bukowski’s permission of course. Another cool Scott Aicher comic, plus tons of reviews and much more.

ISSUE TWELVE • January 2009

Victor Gastelum did the cover art for this issue, and no, that is not Damian Franko on the cover. Pedro Bob helped out with the layout on this one. Ian MacKaye came to Pedro (with help from the Rise and Fall) and did a question and answer gig at Sunken City Skates. We took two of the stories that he told that night for this issue. One story is a detailed account of the Teen Idles’ sketchy trip to California, the other is about when FEAR played on Saturday Night Live and Lorne Michaels asked Ian to bring “real punks” to the taping. Both are great stories. Halbadal sits down with beer and raps with Brian Brannon of JFA about … you guessed it, “skate shit.” A smarty pants interview with Triclops! that will make you feel kinda dumb. A “Pedro Art Damage” feature on artist Shanty Cheryl, nice shots. Vinnie Vegas brings back the “Pedro Heads” section and this time it’s Frankie “Ha-Ha” Lipanovich ... LOL. Kelly K.O. gives her opinion on the Barack Obama, John McCain election. El Beardo gives us an update on the Channel Street Skatepark. “New Bands in Town” are Absorbing Jr., Black Sparrow Press, Solamusica and Sonadora, brought to you by Coco Chappelle. Tito has some things to say about the Pacific Diner. A kooky comic piece by Scott Aicher called “Everyday Heroes.” More Charles Bukowski poems, more reviews, more everything.

ISSUE TEN • May 2007

The cover photo was taken by the late photographer Naomi Petersen. I had a chance to work with Naomi for a short time at SST Records; she was one of the coolest people that I met there. This one features a rare interview with drummer George Hurley about everything you wanted to know and then some. An interview with The Underground Railroad To Candyland that actually also made it in Thrasher Magazine, but this is the entire interview and not the cut-up version. Christian Moreno interviews QUI with lots of smart-ass remarks from one David Yow (Scratch Acid, the Jesus Lizard). Halbadal takes a trip to Orange County and wings an interview with Drinkers Purgatory. Ian Vanek (Japanther, 99mm) interrogates Matt and Kim. A Victor Sedillo spread of awesome 1979-1980 early punk photos. “El Beardo’s Skate Chronicles” includes his usual, awesome, photo work. A “Pedro Art Damage” feature on artist Tom Berg. ISSUE FOUR • May - August 2005

The cover is a photograph of Charles Bukowski sitting in a car, taken by Linda Bukowski. This issue’s feature is a conversation with Mike Watt and Linda Bukowski about Charles Bukowski which is really good. Interviews with Manic Hispanic, the Lipstick Pickups and Left Alone. ISSUE ONE • April 2004

I always wanted to do a fanzine, so this was essentially the trial issue to kind of “test the waters,” as they say. The cover was taken from a stock photography book, how lame. This issue opens up with “The Story of The Channel Street Project,” a do-it-yourself San Pedro skateboard park built by skaters, for skaters, and without permission, a-la the infamous Burnside skatepark in Portland, Oregon. The story is executed by the San Pedro Skatepark Association’s own Andy “El Beardo” Harris. Next, Halbadal tracks down the various members of San Pedro band Toys That Kill, then either forgets the recorder or forgets to turn it on, so he ends up winging it by memory. Typical Hal maneuver. A classic story on the taco truck wars going down in San Pedro titled “Buy Any Beans Necessary” written by taco expert, Vinnie Vegas. The run down on the anti-melody band from L.A. who call themselves 400 Blows, and no, they are not gay. Killer Dreamer is interrogated once again by Vinnie Vegas at the once infamous 673 4th Street pad. A cool story titled “D. Boon In The Present Tense” written by Chris King and swiped from some other rag. A Martin Tamburovich memorial page written by Mike Watt. A reprinted News Pilot story on our late friend Pat Wilder. A centerfold (frontside boneless) of Kobe Newall. A Scott Aicher comic. Misc. stencil art. Vinnie Vegas’ dos & don’ts and a couple of reviews.
